Two-week Cyber Attack Warning.
Below are the steps you NEED to take to stay safe.
According to the FBI and several other authorities across the globe have warned Windows users that in two weeks from today, a particularly malicious virus will attack and steal information from vulnerable computers.
This malware titled ‘Gameover Zeus’ will fish around your computer for files that look like they may contain financial or other sensitive information. Once it finds them, it steals them.
It is understood that around 15,000 computers in the UK may be infected. Whilst the 15,000 figure is relatively low, the warnings are not to be ignored and worldwide, that figure is way into the millions.
So, what do you need to do? Well, if you are not running Windows, you are fine and if you are, here a few essential things:
- Ensure you are using the latest, up-to-date internet security software and do not rely on the ‘free’ protection. Software such as Norton and Bullguard are amongst the best protection available and Sevenoaks Computers highly recommends upgrading to either of these whether you are currently using free protection or any other brand.
- Run virus scans and windows updates. The hackers will be able to gain access to computers that are not updated much more easily. Several of the larger security providers regularly update their software to deal with the latest threats, make sure you are not caught out by running out-of-date software. In addition, make sure that your Windows is up-to-date.
- Make sure that you are not running Windows XP. Windows XP is out of date. It is not advised to continue running Windows XP, particularly due to the latest security threats facing users today. If you are running Windows XP, Sevenoaks Computers have several options for you. Just give us a call.
Lastly, don’t panic. You may have received requests to change your passwords recently, this is a normal procedure and, in the future, you’ll be seeing a lot more of it. If you have any concerns, just give Sevenoaks Computers a call on 01732 466666.
